Now, let’s move on to the return units. The guys on the kick return and punt return teams are fearless. They’re out there, facing a bunch of big, strong guys on the other team, and they’re looking to make something happen. Our returners have some serious speed. It was an incredible sight. And the blockers on the return teams are no slouches either. They work their butts off to clear a path for the returner. They’re like a wall, protecting the guy with the ball and giving him a chance to make a big play.
The coverage teams are equally important. They’ve got to stop the other team’s returners from getting any big gains. They have to be quick to get down the field and tackle the ball – carrier. Our coverage teams are some of the most physical squads on the field. They hit hard and they don’t back down. I’ve seen them make some bone – crushing tackles to stop a return in its tracks. It’s really impressive to watch how they work together as a unit to take away any big play opportunities for the other team.
But it’s not all smooth sailing. Like any part of the team, the special teams have had their off – days. There have been times when a kick has been blocked, or a returner has fumbled the ball. It’s frustrating, for sure, but that’s part of the game. The great thing about this team is that they learn from their mistakes. After a bad play, you can see them huddle up, talk about what went wrong, and then they come back stronger in the next game.
One of the things I’ve noticed as a supplier is how much work goes into preparing the special teams. There are hours and hours of practice.
